A neighbourhood laundry point: how to choose the location
A drop-off and collection point can fit into places people already visit: a workplace, a residential building, commercial premises or a car park. The location should be assessed in relation to the complete service, from the moment garments are dropped off to when they need to be collected.
In a smart city project, assessing a laundry point starts with practical factors: people, the location, the laundry providing the service and the arrangements for collection and delivery visits. This information allows potential locations to be compared.
Laundry services in everyday places.
At a workplace, someone can drop off garments when they arrive and collect them on a later day, after receiving the availability notification. A point in a residential building can offer the same convenience close to home. This brings the service into places people already visit, with the possibility of avoiding a dedicated trip to the laundry.
The chosen location should make both steps convenient. Factors include how often people return, processing times, access hours at the premises and the specified drop-off and collection windows.
Look at the routines of people who use the location
The presence of many people is not enough to establish how useful the point will be. Consider who returns regularly, on which days and how easily they can bring and collect garments.
The same residents may use a residential building every day. A place people pass through may also attract people who do not plan to return soon. These different conditions need to be compared with the service’s turnaround times, without assuming the same demand at every location.
Gather potential users’ needs and check whether the point fits into their usual routes.
Plan for return visits as well as first access
Customers must also be able to reach the locker when their clean garments are available. Examine the location’s opening hours, restricted entrances, closures and access arrangements in the days after drop-off.
With SLC-WA and integrated smart lockers, operations follow the time windows shown by the system. The premises’ actual opening hours must be compatible with that process. Drop-off and collection can therefore extend beyond the laundry’s opening hours, depending on the point’s actual conditions.
For a site with controlled access, also define how the staff responsible for collecting and returning garments will enter.
Involve the laundry in the decision
The Partner Laundry must be able to organise processing and transport for the proposed site. Before choosing, compare the distance, staff routes, time needed for on-site operations and a frequency of visits that the planned organisation can sustain.
SLC-WA links orders to compartments and the configured steps. The laundry runs the service, sets prices and turnaround times, and receives payments from customers. The project needs to identify who will handle these operations from the outset.
If the laundry has not yet been chosen, first gather the details of the location and the service being considered. LockerClean can identify and select a suitable laundry for the project, connecting it with the host.
Assess the space from the operators’ perspective too
As well as a position that is visible to the public, consider door opening, garment handling, the route for delivering the locker unit, power, connectivity and the installation conditions for the specific hardware.
The host looks after the space, safety and accessibility of the location. Laundry operators carry out loading and unloading. LockerClean™ develops the software and coordinates the technology integration: the configuration needs to bring these requirements together.
If a locker supplier is already part of the property project, a software-only option can be assessed, with compatibility checks, any necessary adaptations and testing.
Compare locations before adding points
For each candidate location, prepare a summary covering expected users, return visits, opening hours, operator access, space and the laundry providing the service. Highlight confirmed information and details still to be gathered.
After a point launches, observe usage, uncollected garments, support requests and staff activities. This information helps determine whether to adjust the service or consider other sites.
